With nearly US$1.5 billion in revenues, the client is the
largest drilling and completion fluids supplier in the world.
COSHH is an industrial standard followed by oil drilling and gas
companies for estimating the severity and likelihood of exposure of chemical
substances. Each and every chemical substance used or exposed directly or
indirectly in these industrial environments is subjected for an assessment.
Since these assessments are carried out with very accurate mathematical
calculations and adhered to predefined norms and procedure and also as these
assessments are quite lengthy, it becomes very difficult to maintain the
records manually and to do the calculations.
The main objective of the system is to provide a robust and
scalable application, which is user friendly and easily maintainable. Further
the system would be easily upgraded and deployed in a global environment. The
system would be architecture in such a way so as to provide the maximum
security and versatility to resolve the shortcomings of the existing system. It
involves:
-
Assessing the risks to health arising from hazardous substances at work and
deciding what precautions are needed,
-
Preventing or adequately controlling exposure,
-
Ensuring that control measures are used, maintained, examined and tested,
-
If necessary, monitoring exposure and carrying out health surveillance and
-
Ensuring that employees are properly informed, trained and supervised
With proven experience in the development of management systems
for leading global oil and gas service providers, SCMC had the required domain
knowledge to approach the problem and provide an effective solution.
Technical analysts of SCMC studied the entire working process of
the system and the business flow of oil and gas industry and after careful
planning and analysis came with a unique design to implement the system as such
the entire system was primarily divided into two sub- systems and one database.

System architects and software design team of SCMC modularized the system into
the following modules so as to maintain the system as well as to segregate the
business flow.
User authentication and authorization of authenticated users
based on their windows group-policy/ rights will be implemented through this
module. This module will be responsible for inheriting the windows security
into the system. Since all users are authenticated at the login, the system
will remain highly secured from unauthorized users. And the system will also
remain tightly protected against unauthenticated access into any of the pages
directly by specifying the URL or by circumventing the login procedure.
The Administrator will add new, edit and delete values into the
various lookup tables through the interfacing of administration module. Lookup
table details shall be traversed between various pages of application through
this module. Other than the administrator, all users will have only read access
to the look up table values. These values will be used through out the
application to maintain a consistent data representation through dropdown box,
list box, data grids and text box.
This module will provide functionality to search for parent
sample for sub-sample creation. The user can search data by keywords or
selecting the appropriate criteria from the dropdown box. COSHH assessment
results could be searchable through this module. Based of the results the user
can update or amend the assessments.
Generation of SIRN, Sub sample SIRN and Assessment Ref number
will be made available through this module. This module will provide business
logics for the creation of auto numbers at different sections of the
application by adhering to the formats and conventions required.
Creation of sample will be done through this module. All the
searchable data required for creation of sample will be available to this
module through the look table and users can fill up the data specific to a
particular sample.
Creation of sub-sample will be done through this module. Users
can search the required parent sample details through the search option
provided. And the user can add details specific to a particular sub-sample and
update the data.
This module will maintain the business logic for the calculation
and then ranking of the assessment carried out in the system.
Creation of assessment will be done through this module. COASS
assessment will use the predefined calculation ranking and scores to carry out
the assessment further the user can override the automatically generated
ranking and update the scores.
Interaction with users when any notable events occurs will be
made available through this module, notification can be a message display or
through an e-mail.
Generation of reports will be made available though this module.
-
Being an n-tier architecture upgrading the system into any possible size with
different network boundaries is feasible.
-
Since the business logics are separated from the user interface, as and when
the original business flow or process changes, it can easily implemented
-
. NET frame work make the system more robust and secure
-
ADO.NET make the entire system a disconnected way of data access enabling less
load on Database server and avoids network conjunctions and bottleneck
